Allrecipes.com?!

I have been getting together with an 18 year old Mongolian girl to practice English with her.  We have had some great conversations.  One of our "lighter" conversations happened tonight.  I had made a flan.  I showed her the recipe on allrecipes.com.  She asked, "Do you think they have the recipe for buuz?"  This is a Mongolian meat pocket.  I replied that I didn't think so.  She laughed, "Then, it should be called 'somerecipes.com!'"

We looked up buuz and huushuur.  Neither item is on allrecipes.com.  Maybe I should submit them.  However, if you'd like to see a very similar item to Mongolian buuz prepared, check out this youtube.  The youtube shows a Chinese food being made.  The filling is different, but the dough being rolled out and the pinching of the dough is very much like buuz.  Most Mongolian women make thousands of these a year.  I'm sure every Mongolian eats thousands in a lifetime, too!  It is a staple food item.  Check out the video...and then, perhaps you can try making some for your own family!

Saihan haltharai! (The Mongolian equivalent to "Bon Appetit!")

"Some"recipes.com! I like it! Her English is good enough that she knows the difference between all and some.

We were window shopping last night at an upscale mall, and we browsed in a game store. The clerk was bragging that they have everything. Well, I asked for a specific older board game called "Acquire" that we have played with friends...nope, they didn't have it. (I did find it once online, but it was pretty expensive.)

It looks/sounds a bit like a pastie! (sort of only) You could make that and see how much the Mongolians critique it and think Americans are weird. :)

Emily: That would require me to know how to make pasties...and I don't recall ever making these. Maybe I should get your recipe!
